Little Canyon Cottonwood Road is the only way to enter the Alta/Snowbird ski area and traffic quickly plugs up the pass as early as 7:45 in the morning. In the throes of the stoppage, Alex, Nikhil and I looked for any and all opportunity to get a leg up, move up a few spots in line, or accept a suggestion from google maps to quicken our journey. When we departed the mountain after skiing, traffic was again at a standstill. But this time we noticed something – no car was trying to get an edge, despite possible shortcuts, angles, maneuvers, and opportunities all around. Everyone was just patiently waiting. We decided that this was actually holding everything in life in balance. Were someone to exit the line and try something selfish to get ahead, everything in life as we know it might actually fall apart. There were many forces at play ensuring this didn’t happen: shame, selflessness, a fear of God (SLC’s population is 50% Mormon). But it all combined into the patient, rational line out of the ski valley that bravely holds up the morality of our world.
On the skiing: The snow here is truly special – every turn was soft and fluffy. It was coming down pretty heavy as the lifts closed at the end of the day, so we’re hoping we can get an earlier start this morning and catch some fresh runs!
